Power Analysis for Chi Square: Examples for
Dissertation Students & Researchers

A Chi Square analysis is used to test the hypothesis of no association between columns and rows in nominal tabular data. A power analysis for chi square analysis was conducted to determine the number of participants needed to detect the critical chi square value with an adequate level of statistical power for healing time and implant success.

The alpha for Chi Square will be set at .05. To achieve power of .80 and a large effect size ( = .50) for healing time, a sample size of 44 is required to detect the critical (3) = 7.81. To achieve power of .80 and a large effect size ( = .50) for implant success, a sample size of 32 is required to detect the critical (1) = 3.84.
